Dulce de leche originated in Latin America, where it is known as dulce de leche. Its invention is believed to have been in Argentina in the 19th century, although similar versions exist in other countries such as Chile, Uruguay, and Mexico. Legend has it that it was discovered by accident when a maid left sweetened milk on the stove for too long.

In France, dulce de leche is particularly popular in Normandy and Brittany, where it is made with milk and sugar slowly heated until it achieves a creamy texture and a caramelized flavor. It is often compared to cooked sweetened condensed milk.

Dulce de leche is made by slowly cooking milk with sugar, often in copper pots, to allow the flavors to concentrate and develop caramelized notes. This gentle, low-temperature cooking over an extended period of time transforms the milk into a smooth, creamy delight. Cane sugar is usually used to add an extra touch of sweetness and accentuate the caramel flavor. The result is a thick, smooth, golden jam that's perfect with many sweet treats.
